I got that response too from a UK-based company I approached recently, but
is it true?
I thought, maybe wrongly, that one of the advantages of servlets over other
technologies (CGI, etc.) was that it used *less* resources. Am I wrong in
thinking I read this somewhere?

Regards, Billy.

Try go get a nearby hosting company to host your PC. Much easier because
then you have full control over the application server and you can run
your own DB on the same machine. Not many offers of JSP/servlets as I
know of mainly because many hosting companies claim that it consumes too
many resources compared to other technologies.
