I got that response too from a UK-based company I approached recently, but is it true? I thought, maybe wrongly, that one of the advantages of servlets over other technologies (CGI, etc.) was that it used *less* resources. Am I wrong in thinking I read this somewhere?

Much easier because then you have full control over the application server and you can run your own DB on the same machine.
