Mark - what you are doing is the only solution. The username and domain are a compound key property for the user class. It's not something we can change in the product.

The vast majority of our customers use some aspect of the surname within the username. It is therefore very common for usernames to have to change. Unfortunately, if a username is changed this does not update the AD user config item in service manager. Instead it breaks the link and results in a brand new account being created (and leaves the old one effectively orphaned AND still 'active'). This is because it uses the domain name and samaccountname as the link between AD accounts and SM's AD accounts. Depending on how customers are using service manager, the effects of this range from annoying to disastrous. For example, one of our customers is deploying software to users automatically. When a user changes their name, this results in a new account being created (not linked to relevant CIs which are still linked to the old account) and software is removed from their machine because the 'new' account isn't entitled to it. It would have made a lot more sense link to use the AD object guid as the link between AD accounts and sync'd SM AD accounts as the AD Object GUID won't change when other attributes are amended. Currently, our only workaround is to use powershell, detect this condition, link the new accounts to the old account's related workitems / CIs etc and then delete the old account. Anybody see this or have any feedback?
