I've tried DirectoryStorage earlier and it works.  Personally, I think a
 combination of the ZODB and FileSystemStorage is the best solution.

With some modification of the image and file ATContentTypes you get
storage of most objects in the ZODB, and large objects are stored
outside of the ZODB, in files.

I used Andreas Jung's FSS, which is available here

  ftp://ftp.zopyx.com/open-source/FSS.tar.gz

for that purpose.
