Another thought. You mention seeing "/Users/steve" in the errors. The only reason (that I can think of) that you'd see this is if buildout (which runs as a step in the installation) is trying to compile or link. That should not be happening, as all the binaries you need *should* be in the installer. The only reason that compile/link attempt would happen (that I can think of) is if Python believes that the included binaries won't work on your machine. So, what's the processor on the target machine? Anything particularly old, or new?
