Replying here for anyone else interested.
My issue was due to what appeared to be the issue #11 against openxmllib
(http://code.google.com/p/openxmllib/issues/detail?id=11&can=1). I probably
need to do more testing, but since release 1.0.7 of openxmllib, everything
"just works" with my Plone 3.3.5 buildout (semi-tested with Plone 4.0.1 too)
using z3c.recipe.staticlxml. The install of Products.OpenXml works happily.
Here's what my buildout looks like -- it should be the same as before.

...
lxml
eggs =
lxml
Plone
...
[lxml]
recipe = z3c.recipe.staticlxml
egg = lxml
force = false
[instance1]
recipe = plone.recipe.zope2instance
eggs =
...
