I think this is a bug. I'm using Fedora 13 as OS (which relies on
PulseAudio for sound). I can reproduce the same behaviour when I select
Alsa as the sound API. As soon as I do that, SFLphone crashes. If I
restart it, it loads fine, but when I open preferences it will crash again.
For me, it went away when I removed the file
~/.config/sflphone/sflphone.yml though and let sflphone regenerate it.
Maybe instead of removing it, try manually editing the config file to
specify pulseaudio.
The relevant sections in my sflphone.yml look like this:

cardRing: 0

Hope this helps you a little... please report back if you manage to fix
