If you don't have a multicore processor, it simply defaults to single core. Unless there is some other aspect involved, this should not stop you from upgrading.Just to clarify, PAE doesn't have anything with multicore. PAE stands for physical address extension, which allows 32 bit processors that support it to address more than 4GB of memory.
