Hi Tatjana,
Hmm, you saw this at startup of the SR server, or at startup when
logging into SGD?
I'm not exactly sure what you saw, but here are a few thoughts:
If you saw this as part of the server, then it is most likely that you
are leveraging local Unix users on the server to allow login. The Unix
Login Authority requires a valid home directory for each user. It's
possible that the user 'marcuss' was a new user and hadn't setup his
home directory yet or something.
If you saw this as part of the client when you tried to login from the
Sun Ray, then it's more likely the SGD client component. SGD stores
client connection preferences for each user in their local home
directories on Unix clients, and thus requires a valid path as such.
In response to your side note, I suppose "configuration" is relative. I
think the configuration for a 5250 client within the product is fairly
straight forward. However, I've used the product for a while and setup
for a 5250 object is very similar to other objects. Thus, if you're
used to that, I suppose it would be fairly straight forward.
It's difficult to comment on performance experiences, since something
like that can differ from use to use. Added, I have not specifically
compared/tested the emulator you used. Perhaps someone else has some
notes to add about their experience?
Cheers,
-Jeff

Ok, I'll dare to ask...
why does my SunRay server desire a directory /home/marcuss after SGD
installation at startup? Since there wasn't time to hunt it down, I
gave up and created it, just for the peace of it.
On a sidenote,
for a first impression, I found the tn5250j (java) on sourceforge faster,
and comparably painless to setup than the emulation that comes with SGD.
