the problem was related to the Broadcom BCM57xx driver - upgrading it to
the newest release (9.4.2 06/26/06) resolves the issue.

P.S. are there any patches available for SGD 4.20.xxx ? it seems that
www.tarantella.com is down and i can't find anything in sunsolve.sun.com.
