Thankfully, I haven't had to troubleshoot Bind for a few years now -- your bind config *looks* ok to me, but I can't really explain the no-response behavior, either.

Anyway, the external dns name format you have is fine. But should you wish to change the peer dns name, there's a realtively new command to do this (the old method was kinda gruesome) - called, predictably enough:

# tarantella serverrename --peerdns <new.dns.name> --extdns <new.ext.dns.name>

Of course, I'm sure you know this, but using DHCP for a server IP address is kinda frowned upon. At least be sure to grant very long lease times. Like I said, I'm sure you know that.

Many thanks again Rick!!!

Yes using DHCP for servers is a really stupid idea but am just doing this for convenience as the VM is running on a laptop anyway right now. This is only a demo so no one is worried about which IP address this thing is at, also about the lease times I don't have access to a 'proper' router/dhcp server anyway so will just make do to give my friend an impression of the power of the software as we don't even have a license yet either.....

Not sure what the extdns command is about but I'm guessing if one wanted to give the server an alias of some sort as in sgd.server.com + www.server.com is that the meaning of that??

Ok time to go over to the ISC.org and the bind forum. Is probably syntax or the serial number, it has to be something stupid I know :-) actually I'm just setting up OpenSol now, switched to build 117 so I'm sure the DNS will work in there. Need Sol10 too though as need to show my friend everything!!

Well, I really wish that there were more jobs with SGD and Sun Rays as would be so cool especially for me since I'm just about to break into the pro industry but we'll see down the line what happens. I actually think that this stuff could be huge in a place like Turkey where I am now so hopefully something will come of it :-D

Regards,

Kaya
