Iraq war was a crime of aggression: The damning verdict of top Whitehall
lawyers which No. 10 refused to accept 27 Jan 2010 Tony Blair and Jack Straw
brushed aside repeated warnings from Government lawyers that they would not
have a 'leg to stand on' if Britain invaded Iraq. Devastating evidence at the
Iraq inquiry yesterday revealed that every senior legal adviser at the Foreign
Office believed the conflict was in breach of international law .
Astonishingly, Downing Street asked lawyers to assess what the consequences
would be if Britain toppled Saddam Hussein without legal authority. When they
received the lawyers' memo, No.10 demanded: 'Why has this been put in writing?'
Sir Michael Wood, then the Foreign Office's senior legal adviser, warned
ministers again and again that to go to war without approval from a UN Security
Council resolution would constitute a 'crime of aggression' in international
law.

law chief tells Chilcot inquiry -- Top lawyer tells of his amazement at Foreign
Secretary's refusal to accept advice -- Every lawyer in the Foreign Office
agreed that invading Iraq would be illegal -- Straw asked for advice on
consequences of invading Iraq 'without international legal authority' -- Lord
Goldsmith ordered to say 'Yes' or 'No' whether the war would be legal in
decision branded 'lamentable' 26 Jan 2010 Jack Straw brushed aside warnings
that the invasion of Iraq would be illegal under international law, the inquiry
into the conflict was told today. Sir Michael Wood, who was senior legal
adviser at the Foreign Office, said he had considered resigning on the eve of
the invasion in March 2003 in protest at the decision to join the US-led
attack. He described how he was sidelined after he made clear his objections to
military action.

Lord Goldsmith got taxpayer help for Iraq war inquiry legal advice --Former
attorney general to give evidence to Chilcot inquiry a day after panel is told
Straw ignored warnings invasion was illegal 26 Jan 2010 The former attorney
general Lord Goldsmith has received legal advice from public funds to help him
prepare his evidence tomorrow to the Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war, the
Guardian has learned. His request for help emerged today after the inquiry
heard damning evidence about how under strong pressure from ministers, notably
the then foreign secretary Jack Straw, Goldsmith changed his mind about the
legality of the war at the last minute, saying it was lawful after all.

Blair's appearance at Iraq inquiry to spark mass anti-war protest 25 Jan 2010
Thousands of anti-war campaigners are preparing for Tony Blair’s appearance at
the Iraq inquiry in what could be the biggest political demonstration since
last year’s G20 protests. Riot police will be on stand-by around the Queen
Elizabeth II Conference Centre, close to the Houses of Parliament, as the
former Prime Minister faces more than five hours of questioning on Friday. The
day before, anti-war protesters will attempt to blockade an international
conference organised by Gordon Brown on the future of Afghanistan at Lancaster
House, Central London.
