i got this message before.
my ISP does not support binary authentification.
i need to write a login script.
from [my sharethenet gateway]
-> [advanced setup] -> [network] -> [configure] -> [external ppp connection]
in Chat script:
i added after "CONNECT" something like
'' ':' 'username' ':' 'password' '>' 'ppp'
then [ok] and restart stn.
in my case, it worked.
