I'm using a 486/66 with STN and a cable modem.
When I did before and after tests using the 
Bandwidth Meter at www.2wire.com I found no
appreciable change in effective bandwidth.

Also, IP look-ups seem faster going through STN
rather than the ISP DNS, but this may just be my
imagination.

Not very scientific, but it seems to work fine for me.
