usually the problem is a bad check valve which is part of the fuel pump
assembly. Replacing the existing pump with the 255 unit will probably solve
your problem.

Also, I dont know what kind of car this is, but L-bodies can have their
pumps replaced with out dropping the tank. Just get the tank close to empty,
take off the passenger rear wheel, jack the car up on the pass side, and
pull the pump out with the tank in place.
