It should hold pressure for a long time (hours).  It's probably a dead 
pump.  You should be able to hear the pump when you first turn the ignition 
switch to "Run"... it only pumps for a fraction of a second or so, then 
turns off.  If you don't hear it, it's probably dead.

    There is a hose with a plug in it, coming from the top of the tank, 
which is intended to be a way of draining the fuel.  It's difficult to find, 
and hard to use, but, if there is a lot of gasoline in the tank, you need to 
get it out (it's heavy).  Disconnect feed and return lines, and the filler 
hose, loosen the hanger straps, drop the tank (gently!).  Use a hammer and 
punch (or chisel) to unscrew the retainer, then the pump should just pull up 
and out.

    Been there, done that.
