The tin shield between the engine and the transaxle is likely getting hung up.  
Make sure you remove the lower tin that is held in place with a single 10mm 
bolt on the bottom of the bellhousing.  Another common place to get hung us is 
with the starter and passenger side axle extension housing.

If all of the above is clear, then you will probably need to get a helper to 
pull it apart while you look very closely to see where the hang up is occuring. 
 There may be an issue with the clutch or throwout bearing, perhaps pulling up 
on the clutch arm would help push the transaxle back?
