I've had the same issue with my old beater Acclaim.  The kick-down shaft was 
stuck in its resting position. It was so bad that if I mashed the throttle all 
the way down (in gear, engine off) it would move the shift linkage into 
neutral. It was my parents car, and apparently, they either never opened the 
throttle far enough to actuate the kickdown lever, or my dad never saw it as a 
problem.  Either way, I'm not surprised that it was all stuck together. Ohio 
winters...

I had to simply remove the battery and tray, take the linkage off, and then 
work some PB Blaster in there, followed by a few drops of used motor oil. I oil 
it every once in a while since I don't drive it much.

This should have said same double shaft going in to the tranny.  You'd thing 
when I re-read the thing I would have caught that.
