Hi Joe, I believe they intend for you to install it over the old mirror. I have removed the old mirror before by whacking it and pulling the pieces out (be careful), but the new glass did not fit exactly into the mirror "cradle", so it ended up on top of a thin bed of silicone for centering and positioning purposes.
