If someone imports gadgets files from social-api, it won't compile (unless they
also add the dependency on the gadgets artifact to social-api). If someone
tries to do this, we'll reject their patch.
I think the plugin-less instructions are unnecessary, because there's no reason
not to use the plugin. The rest of what you're saying sounds fine by me.
