I agree shoes should stay small and simple whenever possible. However, complex widgets should be possible and some guide lines are needed for people who like to work on them. Can you recommend any resource for widget development?

I don't really see it as a problem. People could name the gems starting with "shoes-" if they think that would help clarify where they are meant to be used.
