Dave T, then how come you argued with me about 4 years ago that
"SPINES" meant nothing and basically I was full of "SHIT" and then
you joined Spinetalk and "TRIED" to convince ED J, Ed R, Harry S, Max D,
Don J, Ro T, Bill D and others that they were just whistling Dixie with
spines and that it was just a waste of time. Maybe you should
write a paper on it to make others think that spines was your Idea in the
first place.

Agreed! Of the opinions I've
seen, more folks seem to think the spine (or the stiffer FLO plane)
should be in the 12-6 plane than the 3-9 plane. I've never seen an
explanation that makes sense for the 3-9 plane. (I'm still reserving
judgment on the arguments for small spine alignment in ANY plane, but
if the spine is "big enough" -- whatever that means -- it
probably should be 12-6.)
Interestingly, I think this puts
Penley at odds with AJ Tech. Implicitly, at least, I think AJ Tech
endorses (or at least used to endorse, a little over a year ago) the
spine at 3-9. The only AJ shaft I have used had
installation instructions to place the logo at 3 o'clock. From my
measurement, the spine on this shaft is a big one (double-digit cpm
difference between stiff and soft FLO planes), and its location is
right down the middle of the logo. So they seem[ed] to recommend the
spine at 3 o'clock.
John, you represent both companies. Any way to
get them to comment -- or maybe debate -- on
ShopTalk?
Cheers! DaveT
