I have been seeing grip less shafts advertised and was curious
about the effects on swing weight.  I seems to me that taking 50 or so
grams off the butt end of the club would increase the effective swing
weight of a club by about 10 points, i.e. a 70 gram uncut 46 inch shaft
with a 200 gram head would change from a calculated D4 to a calculated
E4 at a 45 inch finished length even though the club would be about 50
grams lighter in total weight.  Curious about any experiences anyone may
have had with these types of shafts?

Dennis,
The main purpose of this type shaft was to reduce the overall weight of the club. The drivers that I have made with the gripless or wrap-on grips ended up being anywhere between a D7 to an E5 at 44 to 45" lengths and weighed less than 300 grams. The big butt shafts have waned in popularity and you can now buy them at clearance prices. I tried some with irons and absolutely hated them. It felt like I was swinging a feather and the ball clubhead collision did not feel solid.  I have had some mild success with drivers.
