My experience several years ago with low cost grip tape was a real pain adhesion was not good and some of the rolls had large gaps with no adhesive at all. But maybe some cheap tape is better than others.

That kind of tape is sold as seconds. Depends on the price. If you pay $2-$3 per roll you can live with the adhesive gaps.  GRIP TAPE DOES LITTLE FOR ADHESION. Its purpose is to provide slime to slide on the grip. I have seen clubs for regripping where the backing paper was never removed, no tape at all, duct tape, carpet tape. I have installed Winn grips on a layer of plain masking tape (with air) where the tape was only to establish the proper shaft diameter.
