We had a big goose problem on our East Tennessee golf courses with all the
TVA lakes in the area. Most are protected areas. My courses are in Tellico
Village southwest of Knoxville on Tellico Lake (once the Little Tennessee
River). One day I was playing our Toqua course, back side. The 14th fairway
ajoins the lake and the green juts out into the lake. Geese loved it! We had to
chase them off just to putt out some rounds. And, when you did putt out, your
ball couldn't miss the poop. One day I rolled in a long one through it all, ran
up to the hole in glee, and without thinking grabbed my ball out of the cup. Got
a whole handfull of poop with it. Now, how was I going to put that ball in my
pocket? Had to walk down to the lake and practically take a bath. I could smell
that stuff on my hands all day.
One of the guys had a home just up the hill and had a lot of fun
counterattacking with bottle rockets. Those, a big old Golden retriever and
some plastic dead geese laid around finally did the trick. Only saw a few on the
course this year. Our new links-style course further down the lake has picked up
a few geese this year and our shorter course never got rid of them.
