Ha! I mentioned this once before on ST...several years ago...
On winter days when I was much younger and playing on the Lancaster CC (#44
ranked course in country in those days), I often got my warmest clothes on and
would play nine holes regardless of the temperature. Our 7th hole was a 510 yard
par-5 which began with a diagonal drive across the Conestoga River, backed up by
the Lancaster Waterworks to about 150 feet across at that point. Carry on the
drive to reach dry land was about 150 yards and the whole left side of the
fairway was a steep wooded hill. This day there was a about a 20 mph wind going
right down the river. Hit a high solid drive, the wind got the ball
and pushed it just beyond the bank on the clear ice. Big bounce...and
another...and another, etc. Disappeared from sight. So, I walked up along the
river bank watching for it and finally spotted it in the hazard about
pin high (in the middle of the river). Nice 510 yard drive, wind aided. :-) Wind
must have blown the ball along the clear ice at least 200 yards. Walked out and
played it, just for the heck of it (real spikes in those days were pretty good
on the ice)...over the pump house, some willow trees and a pond next to the
green. Nice little half wedge shot. Ball hit the frozen green and bounced over,
hit the bank and bounced straight up, came down and rolled back on the green.
Two putts for a "bird."
