Never seen anyone use clamps, but I am sure that would work also.  Seems clumsy to me but you can always learn something new.

This is the correct procedure! TIPS: 1. Do not use a full length of griptape. Four inches will do. 2. After stretching the grip down the shaft a measured length PLACE A SMALL SPRING LOADED CLAMP (I use some 99 cent plastic cheapies from Home Depot) AT THE MOUTH OF THE GRIP it won't slide back. Remove the clamp in 5 to10 minutes.  The grip will now stay stretched! It also helpe to use a .60 grip on a .58 shaft but this doesn't matter to me since I don't duplicate inventory!  I try to use only .58 diameter grips.
