The first two weeks of High School Football practice were known as the hell weeks. Double practice sessions for two weeks in mid August in the Sacramento valley. Naturally, no one took their stuff home to wash it as there wasn't time (somehow, everyone always forgot at the end of the first week). After the first two weeks, you could hardly breathe in the locker room. The coach always made everyone take everything home the weekend before school started and anyone who showed up for first day of school practice without clean practice duds was sent home. Once past that inspection, we used to see who could get away without laundry the longest. Usually the coach would have to intervene again due to complaints from the five gym periods before the football jocks took over. It was like a right of passage.

Gee, you guys took 'em home once a month? We didn't need no steenkin' calendar. At the end of gym period, we balled up each item and threw it against the wall of locker doors. If it fell off, it went back into the locker. If it stuck, it went home to be washed.
