Actually, CocaCola has a decent amount of phosphoric acid and says so right on the can, which does allow it to remove rust.  I've used it many times on various rusty objects.  The objects need to soak a while (e.g. overnight) - it's not nearly as aggressive as naval jelly.

On the other hand, if you don't rinse the coke off, and let it get exposed to air, it will actually promote rusting (hence the need to keep it submerged).

If OOOO steel wool doesn't work, or Blue Away, or car polish rubbing compound fails, get some "Naval Jelly." CocaCola isn't anything but sugar, caramel coloring, and a little flavoring. Using "Coke" to remove rust is a waste of time. Naval Jelly works nearly every time. Naval Jelly is a mild acid compound that works to clear out the rust only. Its available at most Ace Hardware stores as well as Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.
