Would anyone be able to clarify:  Once I have the shaft in the apparatus, what exactly am I wanting to do with the shaft to find the spine?

I assume that the spinefinder you have built  has 3 bearings. Two near the butt of the shaft and a third bearing that you put near the tip of the shaft. The third bearing is pulled down and causes the shaft to bend. Rotate the shaft under tension near the butt and it wi act like it is going over a "speed bump"     the top of the bump is the spine, when it passes the bump and comes to rest the shaft is at NBP.
Mark each of these. You can now FLO the shaft (bet you thought you were finished).
If you don't FLO the shaft you have done half the job.
Spine can be placed at 3, or 9 o'clock position as you hold the club at address. Regarding these positions we can now open the great debate which should last until the last carole is sung!
