Drop me a line, I can answer your questions.  But I need more info.
What OS, type of machine and camcorder.

If you have a DV cam, you can use a firewire solution.  Otherwise,
you'll need a video capture card.  I find that you get better
picture quality through the DV route on a budget system.

PS.  You'll need a lot of disk space to capture video.  About 20G/hr
worth of video at DV quality.
