Yes indeed, it has been that long. The incident I have in mind took place July 4, 2003. Charlie and Bob Corbo, a teaching pro that Charlie has worked with for longer than I've known him, invited me for a round of golf with them. (Neither of them ever gets out to play. I've been bugging them about this as long as I've known them. It's the only time I've actually seen Charlie play golf. So I was delighted to go along, even though it was a hot day and I had already played 18.)
After we putted out on the second green, Charlie stopped us before we walked off. He tossed down a ball 20 feet or so from the hole, handed his own putter to Bob, and said, "Here, try this."
Bob hefted it, then took a couple of practice strokes. "I don't like it."
"Just hit the damn ball with it."
He did. Dead center.
Charlie threw down another ball. This one stopped an inch or two short, right in the heart. Bob said, "I still don't like it." But he putted better with it than he did all day with his own putter. (You gotta know Bob to fully appreciate how funny it was.)
We retrieved the ball in front of the hole, and Bob handed the putter to me. I hit one 20-footer with it. Also in the middle of the hole. Best putt I made all day.
That was one of their earlier prototypes. Last Thursday I was swinging their latest and greatest, and it's better than that early one was. But, even a year and a half ago, I'd say 80-90% of the improvement was already there.
I guess the point is...
I think it works. But even if it didn't, this product is not just a saleable idea that got rushed to the market. They did their homework. The R&D is there.
Cheers! DaveT
