Title: Re: ShopTalk: Re: .mac and virus protection
Took me about a day for the "wear-in" period and as quickly as I could change all my applications to be 10 based it was done.  Once there, I have never run the old system again.  I don't even have "classic" on  my G5 dual processor power house.

gerry sorry i've been so busy to reply.

i can't believe you don't use osx 10.3 i found that after the initial "wear-in" period was over you'd have to use a gun to make me go back.

Sean,
I'll defer to you on OS 10 since I like the classic Mac OS much better, (running 8.6 on this computer and 10.2.3 on another) and only use 10 when I have to cause it reminds me of windows, but I don't understand why 10 would be different than 8.6.
As I understand it a true disk repair, not to mention de fraggiing can't be done correctly when the start up disk is the same as the disk running the computer.
I kind of liken it to trying to install carpet with out removing the furniture.
I know 10 is a unix  based OS but a hard drive is a hard drive, so if you can explain further or refer me to somewhere that can I would appreciate it!
I'm ging to macintoshguy.com right now.

i know it's off topic but OS 10. does not require defragging. If you buy Symantec software you are wasting your money. Disc repair is best handled by disk utility (in your utilities folder.). After being a Mac user since my first mac Classic I have to say don't get sucked in by windows software companies that think you need windows style protection. you can subscribe to great mailing lists at the macintoshguy.com that will answer any questions you have.

If you want more mac info email me offlist and i would be glad to help out.

 Dean,
The very latest version of Norton Systemworks for Mac 3.0  comes with virus software,  http://www.symantec.com/sabu/sysworks/mac/index.html  it's pretty much a must have for disk repair and de-fragging the hard drive.
Retail is $129.95 but there are usually rebates etc.
e-Bay is sometimes a good source if it's been out for a while.

Sounds good that no virus checker is needed so far. I tried the free version of .MAC and it doesn't include the virus checker. Gotta pay $100 for the full version. Lot of money for stuff we will never use,  I think I'll check elsewhere.

Dean, I've been a Mac user since the 80's and online since it was first available around here.
I've never had virus protection or a virus. That's not to say it couldn't happen or isn't a good idea, but there are very few Mac viruses.
As for .mac. I think you get a free trial with a new computer or the latest version of OS 10.
Try it out, but I think you have to pay after 30 days and also pay for your ISP. Just seems like paying twice to me.
If you're worried about a virus, get one of the latest virus programs which can be updated, just make sure it's compatible with OS 10.3x or whatever comes with your new computer.
The versions for OS 10.2x may not be compatible.

Dean I have been using a mac all my computing life. It's nice of you to rescue your wife from the dark side. If you were going to get a .mac membership for the antivirus only i wouldn't bother since there has yet to be a verifiable virus for osx. I'm sure you will soon be envious of your wifes hassle free computing. Despite Don's assertion that there aren't many applications written for the mac i have never had a problem in that regard except for good canadian tax software as this year Quicktax didn't release a Canadian mac version. Good Luck!
