Tom,

Arnie's correct. Go with a propane torch if you are short on patience (like
me).

The first couple of years as a clubmaker, I always had trouble with a heat
gun frying the hosels. I just kept heating around the hosel only. Then, I
read TFlan's explanation of how to use a propane torch properly and have
never fried another head...well, at least not the first three times I pulled
it. :-) Using a torch, I can pull shafts from most normal bores in less than
30 seconds with a homemade drill press vise puller (I'd guess it has medium
pulling force). Three inch bore-thrus might require another 15-30 seconds.
Can't remember a head that took over a minute with normal shafting epoxy.
Had a couple of OEM heads with deep bores that took a couple of
minutes...different kind of epoxy, I think. Have done a lot of Bang-O-Matics
lately and a shaft in to the full 3" bore on them takes me only about 45-50
seconds, sometimes less.

The metal head is huge heat sink and takes away all the heat you put on the
hosel before it ever gets to the epoxy. Using a heat gun only around the
hosel, you are continually heating the hosel paint and the body of the head
is sucking up the heat before the epoxy reaches its about 250° breakdown
point. In the meantime, all that heat is on the hosel finish. Paint
discolors.

Heat is heat, whatever the source and propane torch heats a head faster than
a mini-torch or a heat gun, though all will work OK. The secret is to
"paint" the main body of the head with the propane flame, constantly washing
back and forth over the head...the sole, the face, the crown, everything. Do
one side and wash the flame back over to the hosel and down behind the heel.
Do another side and back to the hosel. As you raise the body temperature,
the heat on the hosel will stay on the hosel instead of migrating to the
head. No problem, no discoloration and fast results.

Try it on a couple of heads. My heat gun is now relegated to warming
ferrules and grips.
