I use relatively heavy mono filament fish line mostly. I put it in the back
side of the hosel and snap it off as soon as the fit seems snug. If that
doesn't work, I have some of those really thin tag twist ties that work
most every time.

You may want to read the note I sent last week re: using an iron ferrule on
a wood shaft. I shimmed that, too.
