I have to admit I hadn't observed that. I suspect that running Linux
on a box is one thing, finding out how to drive it's ADSL hardware is
another difficult step.

True - that's just what I do. I have a box running all the time
anyway running mail, Azureus, dns, dhcp, etc, etc, so I've recently
ditched the router and connected directly with a second nic and a
Netgear DM111P modem - and of course Shorewall.

Should you choose the DM111P, be aware that the firmware in shipping
units, and the update on their website, has a problem with IPSEC VPNs
- so the units I've been setting up at work for a customer are
running a Beta firmware they supplied.

I did try a D-Link DSL-300T modem which is now quite old, but it kept
falling over - I suspect it couldn't cope with the ARP table created
by lots of Bittorrent peers connecting.
