I manage a handful of linux systems remotely from a windows 7 desktop, 
and on occasion I do fire up xming, I primarily use putty, byobu 
(enhanced screen replacement), and vim.

However, the implication, which I failed to make effectively, is that 
SIMPLE configs (like the Universal) could be merged into a single file, 
or more complex configs merged into a single file for distribution to 
multiple systems.  I never intended to imply that I thought editing long 
complex configs in a single XML file routinely was better.
