Forgive me for top-posting, but I am so excited by discussion of new
configuration file formats I just had to.

I see discussion of JSON, XML, and I feel I must also suggest Sumerian
Cuneiform. Cuneiform is exceedingly compact and not vulnerable to
inadvertent or erroneous changes:
