So I guess my params file can contain something like this:

INCLUDE /opt/firewall_data/params.TYPE

if [ ${#FW_TYPE} -gt 0 ]; then

[... do something ...]

fi

#LAST LINE -- DO NOT REMOVE


At first glance it seems to be working as expected.
