His plan is, AFAICT, to use NAT/MASQ to remap the addresses - so (for example) 
from one end, the 10.0.0.0 addresses at the other are reached as (for example) 
172.31.0.0. I believe he's worked out that that's what's needed - but is 
struggling to get it actually working.

It shoudl work, but as I'm not familiar with using tunnels (and specifically 
how they interact with NAT/MASQ) - I can't comment on what may be wrong.
