As well as IPTABLES=, thanks. Basically, in Gentoo if "nftables" is used the binaries will point to xtables-nft-multi otherwise they will point to xtables-legacy-multi. The problem is that on my system the iptables command points to xtables-legacy-multi whereas the arptables symlink is non-existant. I guess it must have been a Gentoo installation error as portage updates quite frequently.
