Regarding the settings not persisting, others (who are running Ubuntu Lucid
Lynx) have seen this problem as well.  It's because they haven't installed a
full set of dconf packages, which is how gsettings persist configuration
information.  Without it, gsettings defaults to a memory-based backing,
which, as you might guess, go away when the program exits.
