There's a gphoto command line tool you can install to query the camera and
download photos. This too *might* give you some more detailed information,
but more likely it will fail the same way Shotwell did.  This would help
confirm that it's indeed a GPhoto bug, however.

Not directly. For photos, you can "trick" Shotwell into generating new
images by selecting photos, hitting the Rotate button, then undoing the
rotate.
