When I hit F8 I notice the cursor doesn't automatically focus into the
search field. So the order is hit F8, then click in the search field,
then type. If you press F8 when the entire library is selected, it can
take several seconds for entered text to appear anyway so it's not
always immediately obvious that the focus is not there. It'd be more
intuitive for the F8 hotkey to automatically focus the cursor in the
text box.
