ah, right, I think I see what's going on now.

If I'm right, shotwell is treating each event date as an indivisible entity. It so happens that a few of the photographs in the event have the wrong date, and when I adjust them, shotwell is keeping the group of photos intact, and assigning a *date range*. I hadn't noticed this the first time I tried it.

In this example I select 4 images and adjust the date to 9th Aug 2003, and the event is renamed to correspond to the new date range for the event.

I suppose a workaround would be to export the images from shotwell then adjust the dates using exiftool or exiv2 or similar, then re-import.
