Hi
I had a system flashed with SHR-unstable from sometime in May and
continuous update & upgrade, but the version from the 22. July gave me a
'opkg: fork failed' and some other errors, I believe that failed isn't
any good :-) I lost some of the icons on the desktop and came to the
conclusion that I just could re-flash the system. Did that with the
20090721 version and it seemed to work fine. Decided then to update &
upgrade and ended with the 'opkg: fork failed' again, has anybody
experienced something similar??

Me too, just flashed and opkg update & upgrade:

Have you tried using a swapfile?
I did my upgrade yesterday. When i saw that it was starting to take time on frameworkd-config, and that the load was getting higher, i killed -9 opkg, activated my swapfile, and retried. It took some time but was successfull (i can't tell for sure that the swapfile helped, but if you haven't reflashed yet it might be worth trying).
