Thanks!  This fixed it:

# opkg -force-reinstall install etk-theme-shr

I didn't need to reinstall shr-theme.  And now I know what broke it.  I
had thought about giving the nEo theme a try.  I had got as far as
installing the replacement etk-theme-shr when I decided that it wasn't
worth the hassle of installing 5 or 6 new packages manually, that
installing a theme should be easy not hard.  I uninstalled the
replacement and the uninstall script *said* that it was reverting to the
original, but apparently it didn't, or did it incorrectly.
