It seems I just didn't wait long enough. I got distracted yesterday while the 
message app was running, and when I got back it had replaced the numbers with 
names. This happens ~25s after app start which is longer than I would usually 
take to open the app, read the new message, then close the app again, so I 
don't usually see it happen.
