Packages we don't need are: hal and libpam.
Removing hal could save one MB, libpam not more then 1 or 2 KB.
Next thing one can do is to remove some kernel modules, like sunrpc, nfsd, nf-
conntrack, scsi-mod, udf, snd-pcm-oss.
And installing only en-us locale.

Those things aren't discussed on any wikipage. This is what the SHR coreteam 
is doing. For those things you have to dive deep into OpenEmbedded and you 
have to learn a lot.
There is a link to the bitbake manual on the wiki page, that would be the next 
step you have to do.

But if you join the IRC channel and answer questions and test our images we 
can do all this together with you.
