If you use VNC with tight protocol and jpeg compression, is far faster than X tunneling, even with ssh compression. It's even usable over a slow (64-128 kb/s) link. For X over slow links I use NX (http://nomachine.com/) with great success. Although nomachine NX server are not free (as in freedom), libraries are free, and based on them there is a free NX server: http://freenx.berlios.de/
