Ok. After trying reinstalls for all the illume packages and removing the .e directory and rebuilding, I finally removed the /root/.efreet directory which appears to be come sort of cache. After restarting X (/etc/init.d/xserver-nodm restart) I got my buttons back! :-) Happy Happy Joy Joy!
